Opening Night: Wet Silhouette x 𝘋𝘳𝘪𝘧𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴 (1929)

Thursday, June 26 · 8PM · BAC Rooftop

𝘋𝘳𝘪𝘧𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴 (1929) is the story of the North Sea herring fleets from Yarmouth and Lowestoft to Shetland, which broke new ground in 1929. It tells the story of Britain’s North Sea herring fishery. The film’s style has been described as a response to avant-garde, Modernist films, adopting formal techniques such as montage – constructive editing emphasising the rhythmic juxtaposition of images – but also aimed to make a socially directed commentary on its subject. This film initiated the documentary movement in Britain.

Wet Silhouette is a trio formed in Beirut and born out of extensive free form improvisations between Claudia Khachan (synths, melodica, vocals), Anthony Tawil (drums), and Ziad Moukarzel (bass). Their sound blends raw acoustics with layers of effects, effortlessly transitioning between shoegaze, noise and experimental rock.

In this live ciné-concert, Wet Silhouette responds to 𝘋𝘳𝘪𝘧𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴 through an improvisational score that mirrors the film’s formal experimentation and its tides of movement, labor, and sea.

The performance will be followed by a DJ set by Roland Ragi (Back From The Crate).
