In response to the current humanitarian crisis in Lebanon, where over 1.2 million people have been forced to leave their homes—including 95,000 children—Beirut Art Center is launching Artists in Shelters, an initiative that aims to bring the healing power of art to displaced children.
Why Art?
In challenging times, art can help us see the world differently. It can soothe, comfort, and uplift, inspiring us to take action. Artists in Shelters will bring together a team of Artist Facilitators with diverse skills and backgrounds to provide young children displaced from their homes with an outlet for creative expression. While their basic needs are met by dedicated volunteers, NGOs, and civic organizations, our team of artists will focus on the process of creation rather than the technique or final product,
using a variety of art forms—drawing, painting, crafts, photography, creative writing, music, and more. The underlying principle is that group participatory art sessions can enhance well-being, confidence, and relaxation while reducing or alleviating trauma- related symptoms, such as fear, anxiety, and other mental health conditions.
How Can You Help?
We are calling on psychologists, social workers, and artists experienced in working with children to join us on the ground. Your skills can make a transformative impact on these youths.
