BAC design · Ranya Sarakbi: Biomechania

Biomechania, which in modern Greek means industry, comes from the ancient words for life and machine, thus biomechanics:  “the study of the structure and function of biological systems by means of the methods of mechanics.” The objects in this exhibit are crafted in metal. They are inspired from the exploration of the role of mechanics in biological systems, as well as the relationship between the sentient being and the environment.

crafted by Ranya Sarakbi, Biomechania is a continuation of Fauna, a body of work that began with the series Humankind: a selection of wrist pieces inspired by the beginnings of humans as toolmakers, hunters, defenders, and over time their involvement in ritual; it paid homage to the way humanity assured its survival.

The works on display are the result of an exploration of more complex totems and different fauna. Here, focus also shifts to industry, which gave method to the need for progress, and the biomechanics that offered insight to increasing the efficiency of humans’ work and improving the quality of life, pushing the limits of what was humanly possible.
