The project suspended spaces arose in 2007 from a meeting between artists and researchers concerning a specific space, varosha, the modern beach suburb of the Cypriot city, Famagusta, constructed in the 1960s, abandoned then encircled following the Turkish offensive of northern Cyprus in 1974. Although this project is inscribed in a contemporary geopolitical reflection, it also attempts to envisage suspended spaces from an artistic and aesthetic point of view. Twenty-nine artists were thus invited to residences in Cyprus and elsewhere, which gave rise to the production of works, followed by an exhibition at the maison de la culture in Amiens, France in January 2010 and a publication testifying to the discussions around the concept. Following a presentation of the project, the book was launched during vidéo ET après at the centre Pompidou on January 17th, 2011. Several disciplinary fields were solicited in order to broaden the scope of questions and to propose interpretations of specific spaces.

All going well, the project will continue in the coming years by effecting confrontations with new territories, through the articulation of residencies that will remain indispensable in order to share a common experience, one of the founding principles of this research. The project’s vocation is to displace geographically and symbolically, to circulate, and to be accompanied by partners who will enrich the ensemble while conserving the project’s spirit and the economy. The temporary title of this second phase of the project is suspended spaces #2 creation, territories, and decentration.

The project suspended spaces #1 since Famagusta will be presented at the Beirut art center by the members of the collective and a certain number of its actors. Presentations, exchanges between artists, programs of videos, and performances will be proposed over three days to the public. A round table uniting partners and Lebanese artists is destined to provide the conceptual and practical base for the forthcoming steps of the project: Lebanon as a future anchor point for our research?
